By-elections tend to exaggerate the size of the swing against the government, but they still tell a story about the direction of public opinion and its intensity.
People don’t trust Boris Johnson and they worry about the economy, and that distrust and worry is everywhere.
By-election results are often dismissed as midterm blues. And they might be. But only if one or both of the fundamentals changes. One change might be that voters change their view of the Tory leader.
